HOEW 119 HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND CULTURAL CONTENTS
This course explores how various historical heritages at home and abroad, from architecture and monuments to rituals and customs, are culturally reproduced and enjoyed from the current perspective. In particular, it focuses on understanding how past heritage is used in the public sphere of modern society. To this end, we explore history and cultural heritage at home and abroad.
HOEW 201 INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORICAL SCIENCE
A survey of the concept of history, patterns of historical view-points and principal periodization with examination of the historical cognition and method of historical-critical study.
HOEW 202 INTRODUCTION TO ASIAN HISTORY
This course tries to give general knowledges of East Asian history.
HOEW 223 HISTORY OF CHINA AS MULTIETHNIC STATE
The course offers an opportunity to examine the Chinese history from the perspective of vicissitudes of multiple ethnic groups, thereby overcoming Han-centric limitations.

A survey of the general trends in political and economic life of the ancient Greco-Romans as well as sundry aspects of their everyday life.
HOEW 313 EARLY MODERN WESERN HISTORY
This course surveys the making of modern society from the Renaissance and Reformation to the Enlightenment period.
HOEW 315 LATE MODERN WESTERN HISTORY
This course surveys the process of political, industrial revolutions from the mid-18th to the late 19th century with relation to the ideologies such as nationalism, liberalism and socialism and the accompanying socio-economic changes.

A survey of British history from the Anglo=Saxon to modern periods with emphasis on history since the Tudor dynasty.

This course surveys the German history from the Germanic migration to the 20th century with stress on the position, role and meaning that German history takes in European history.

This course surveys the American history from its origin to the 20th century with stress on the position that U. S. A takes in the contemporary world history.

This course deals with the special topics selected from the 20th-century history from the World War I to the decline of socialistic countries.
HOEW 421 TOPIC IN CHINESE HISTORY I
This course intends to deepen understanding of Chinese history by surveying the important topics. Lecturing in Chinese language, the course includes reading, analysis and discussion of selected Chinese sources.
HOEW 431 TOPIC IN WESTERN HISTORY I
This course provides an intensive understanding of special themes taken from Western History. This course will follow a special topic that is not covered in the epoch or state's history. During the lectures, a number of classics and modern research works will also be introduced.
HOEW 435 POLITICS OF THE MIDDLE AGES AND MODERN STATES
In this course, we will understand the concept and reality of "Ecclesia," which presented the standard of life after the demise of the Western Roman Empire. And we understand the nature and development of "State," which began to form at the end of the Middle Ages. Furthermore, we understand the relationship between the medieval church and secular power, and look at the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
HOEW 450 HISTORY OF CHINESE CULTURE
This course will focus on particular issues of social, cultural changes and differences in Chinese history.

This course surveys diachronically the development of Chinese historiography and historical studies from the origin of 'shi'(history) to recent times.

This course investigates intensively the major issues of Japanese modern times in political, economical and social level and inhances the understanding of the peculiarities and universalities of Japan.

This course surveys the long 19th-century France from the Revolution of 1789 to the outset of the World War I with stress on the establishing process of republicanism.

This course surveys the Russian history from its origin to the decline of Soviet with stress on the success or failure of socialistic experience.

This course surveys the history of Southeast Asian countries with stress on the specific cases selected from them.
HOEW 406 HISTORY OF RELATIONS BETWEEN KOREA AND CHINA
This course examines the Korean-Chinese international relations from the ancient to the contemporary times, especially after the Song dynasty.
HOEW 412 CIVILIZATIONS OF ANCIENT NEAR EAST
This course surveys the political and cultural history of the civilizations in Ancient Near East, especially giving attention to the question of what were their legacy and impact on the formation and development of the classical antiquity.
HOEW 420 CHINESE REVOLUTION AND CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY
This course is designed to explore the history of Chinese Communist Party, Chinese Revolution and People’s Republic of China.
HOEW 422 TOPIC IN CHINESE HISTORY II
This course intends to deepen understanding of Chinese history focusing on a particular dynasty or time period. Lecturing in Chinese language, the course leads students to learn historical terminologies and views commonly accepted in Chinese language area.
HOEW 432 TOPIC IN WESTERN HISTORY II
This course provides an intensive understanding of special periods taken from western history. The class covers special periods that are not included in the traditional historical periodization. The lecture will introduce a number of different views and works on that periods.
HOEW 444 HISTORY OF COLD WAR
This course compares the world policies of the U.S. and the Soviet Union after World War II. and analyzes the logic and process of the U.S. and the Soviet Union's intervention in the world. In addition, the history of the Cold War is understood through the analysis of the first-hand materials.
HOEW 446 GENOCIDE AND HOLOCAUST
This course deals with the organized violence of the state, one of the negative phenomena that emerged in the development of modern history in the West. Along with the growth of the nation-state, organized violence that first emerged in the West reached its peak through the Holocaust. This violence was combined with racism through the process of colonization and appeared widely in non-Western regions. We examine the causes and development patterns of genocide and find preventive measures.

This course surveys the practices of Western historiography from the classical antiquity to the contemporary time with special attention to the development of Western historical studies and the formation of Western philosophy of history.

This course is a general introduction to modern and contemporary history of Latin America.
HOEW 482 GENDER HISTORY
This course looks at Western history from a gender perspective. We first look at the theoretical discussion on gender. Based on this, the cause of oppression against women, the structure that has enabled women's subordination, and the development of the women's movement to break this structure are reviewed. Furthermore, we think of alternatives to realize gender equality from the perspective of feminism and even seek paths to realize this alternative.

HOEW 134 THE HISTORY OF NOMADIC EMPIRES(AR)
This course explores the history of nomads who were considered as "barbarians' and peripheral peoples by the Europe or China. The course focuses particularly on the history of nomads who established great empires in the Eurasian Steppe and examines their interactions and confrontations with settled societies such as China. Through an examination of nomadic empires, this course aims to nurture students' world-historical thinking and expand their understanding of history beyond the national and regional (East Asian) framework.
HOEW 137 NEW PERSPECTIVES ON EAST ASIAN HISTORY(AR)
This lecture aims to look at East Asian history for 4000 years from a new perspective. The purpose of this lecture is twofold. First, it seeks East Asian history from a macro view that covers various historical subjects from the Chinese (Han) perspective. Second, it is to understand the whole process of change including the economy, society and culture from the viewpoint of the political history. This will help students to develop a balanced perspective on East Asian history.
HOEW 138 HISTORY AND HEROS IN CHINA(AR)
This course is designed to understand today's China by selecting people who made and moved past and present China, looking at each other's life, comparing and evaluating them. It also examines the historical identity of East Asian people, including Koreans, through the typical human types of Chinese history.
HOEW 139 REFORMS AND REVOLUTIONS IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY CHINA(AR)
This lecture examines the history of China from the Opium War of 1840 to System of Xi Jinping, focusing mainly on the reform movement and the revolutionary movement. By examining the process of change of society, economy and culture without limiting the view to political events, I will examine the formation, development, transformation, and limitations of China in a comprehensive way. This approach is meaningful in that it can understand the current Chinese society as a whole by illuminating areas that have been overlooked in the history of the history of political history, and present a historical prospect.
